“Apo 6” refers to the tragic 2005 extrajudicial killings of six young Nigerian traders (five men and one woman) in the Apo district of Abuja by members of the Nigeria Police Force.
The Incident
On the night of June 7, 2005, the group visited a nightclub in Abuja where a minor altercation occurred between them and a senior police officer, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Danjuma Ibrahim. Leaving the club, the officer went to a nearby police checkpoint and falsely claimed the group were armed robbers. When the traders arrived at the checkpoint, officers opened fire, killing four on the spot. The remaining two were killed the following day in a systematic cover-up meant to frame them as robbers.
The Aftermath & Legal Battle
- Judicial Inquiry: A board of inquiry established by former President Olusegun Obasanjo found no evidence the victims were robbers and ordered the prosecution of the involved officers.
- Convictions: Following a protracted trial that lasted over a decade, an Abuja High Court in March 2017 sentenced two junior police officers to death for their role in the killings.
- Acquittals & Controversy: DCP Danjuma Ibrahim and several other officers were acquitted due to a lack of evidence. The acquittal and the subsequent reinstatement of implicated officers into the police force caused widespread outrage and remains a prominent case cited by human rights activists in Nigeria.
