National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Tanimu Turaki, has stated that the party has not received any official communication from Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke regarding his purported resignation from the party.
Turaki spoke to newsmen shortly after the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) meeting in Abuja on Tuesday. He emphasized that while Adeleke has the right to stay or leave the PDP, the party has yet to receive formal notification of his resignation.
“We have seen in the media a letter purportedly from him resigning his membership of our party, but up to this moment, we have not officially received any indication that he has left,” Turaki said.
He noted that Adeleke’s name remains on the list of aspirants vying for the party’s ticket in the upcoming governorship primary. “If he decides either in person or through a representative that he has withdrawn, that will be reflected in the report we receive,” he added.
Turaki stressed that, even if the media reports are accurate, Adeleke, like every Nigerian, has the constitutional right to freedom of association. “He is free to join or leave any political party,” he said.
The PDP chairman also highlighted that the party’s strength lies with the people, not just the elected officials on its platform. “If you look at states where some governors defected, surveys show that most of the people did not follow. That is what we are counting on. Our people remain intact, and by the grace of God, they will demonstrate during elections that the PDP is strong and united,” Turaki said.
Regarding the party’s internal processes, Turaki confirmed that the NWC had reviewed and approved congresses in Osun for selecting ad-hoc delegates and noted that the governorship primary in the state is ongoing peacefully. “As I speak, the primaries are ongoing, and Gov. Adeleke’s name remains among the aspirants vying for the ticket,” he said.
Turaki further reported that the NWC reviewed preparations for the Anambra local government elections. “We are satisfied with the report from the party leadership in Anambra State. They are well-prepared, and we hope to perform well in that election,” he said.
On the issue of former PDP governors nominated by President Bola Tinubu for non-career ministerial appointments, Turaki said the party had not received any communication from them. “We wish them well. If they notify us, we will consider it on its merits. But for now, no communication has been received regarding these appointments,” he added.
Addressing Nigeria’s security challenges, Turaki said the NWC urged the federal government to review the country’s security architecture. He stressed the need for the government to protect citizens and their property nationwide.
“We in the PDP believe that it is unacceptable for governors to be designated as chief security officers of their states without control over the operational activities of military and security personnel in their territories. This system needs to be overhauled,” he said. (NAN)
