Professor Tosan Harriman, a lecturer at Bayero University, Kano, has come under intense criticism following a series of controversial and unsubstantiated remarks made on social media platform X.
His comments, which targeted renowned human rights lawyer Chidi Odinkalu and a factional president of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), have raised serious concerns about academic responsibility and the reckless use of social media. Harriman’s most incendiary comment was a reaction to Odinkalu’s article titled “Blessed Are the Crooked Judges”, published by Sahara Reporters. The article, which critiques judicial misconduct and the National Judicial Council’s (NJC) lenient treatment of erring judges, has drawn national attention. In response, Harriman wrote on X: “Chidi Odinkalu, This one will go to jail soon.” The remark, which lacks any evidence or legal context.
Odinkalu, a former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission and currently a professor at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, is widely respected for his fearless advocacy against judicial corruption. In his article, he spotlighted instances like the case of Justice Inyang Ekwo, who was sanctioned by the NJC for abuse of office, and argued that systemic leniency threatens the integrity of Nigeria’s judiciary.
In another inflammatory post, Harriman also took aim at a factional NANS president, writing: “See the criminal NANS President. Once their FBI or CIA plot was shifted for ninety days they resorted to this evil broadsides of Seyi Tinubu.” The comment appears to refer to a recent controversy involving a disputed NANS inauguration on April 29, 2025, at the Wells Carlton Hotel in Abuja. One faction of the student body had accused Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, of interfering in the process — an allegation he has denied. Harriman’s remarks invoke far-fetched claims involving foreign intelligence agencies but, again, offer no evidence.
