Sanni Hameedat, a 20-year-old student of University of Ilorin, is believed to have taken her own life on Monday over her boyfriend’s failure to refund N500,000 borrowed for his mum’s cancer treatment.
Hammedat was said to be a 300-level student undergoing Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme, a required component of her course curriculum, before her demise.
She was a resident of Rubiks Hostel, a private residential facility on the school campus, where she reportedly lost her life.

Although no autopsy result has been made public, the hostel management has released a statement detailing the circumstances traceable to the student’s death.
The management explained that she ingested Sniper insecticide as a result of pressure from her inability to repay loans she obtained from mobile loan apps.
She was believed to have conditionally obtained the loan because an unnamed boyfriend, whom she lend N500,000 from her mother’s money in her custody, failed to return the money. The so-called boyfriend rather disabled communication channels with the lady.
The statement read in part, “It was reported that she committed suicide by ingesting a bottle of insecticide which eventually killed her even after a swift response of rescue. The cause of suicide was traced to a financial misappropriation. She was entrusted with a significant sum of money by her mother.
“She crossed paths with a guy on Snapchat and they developed a friendship. When the boy claimed that his mother was battling breast cancer and urgently needed N500,000, she compassionately and emotionally decided to help him by lending him half of the N1 million she was holding for her own mother. The boy promised to repay the borrowed money.
“However, when her mother needed the money back, the boy abruptly cut off all contact, blocking her. This left her deeply troubled, and in order for her to make up for the missing N500,000, she resorted to borrowing money from various apps.

“She managed to gather N450,000 from these sources and added her own savings of N50,000 to the total. The pressure from the app agents, who were demanding repayment, coupled with her brother’s inability to assist financially at that moment, left her overwhelmed and depressed.
“I guess this intense stress, coupled with the emotional burden she was carrying, led her to make a tragic decision. She was reported to have taken Sniper the previous night. Her roommate, who had retired to bed early, woke up in the middle of the night and discovered her in distress, removing foam from her mouth.”
