Getty) Naomi Osaka cut short her Wimbledon post-match press conference saying she was ‘about to cry’ after suffering a shock defeat to Yulia Putintseva on Monday afternoon. The Japanese star is the reigning US Open and Australian Open champion but results have tailed off since splitting with her coach, Sascha Bajin, and she has been particularly out of sorts on grass. Before arriving at the All England Club she lost in straight sets against Putintseva in Birmingham and suffered the same fate at Wimbledon, losing 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 to the Kazakh.

Remember the name: Gauff pulled off a remarkable result on No.1 Court (Picture:Getty) Teenage sensation Cori Gauff pulled off a memorable Wimbledon upset by beating Venus Williams in straight sets 6-4 6-4 as the youngest player in the competition beat

The 15-year-old American is the youngest ever player to qualify for the main draw, beating a Top-100 player for the first time in the process, and was handed a rather symbolic match-up against Williams – 24 years her senior. Venus had won four of her seven Grand Slams before Gauff was even born, but the teen quickly showcased all the precocious talent and confidence that has marked her out as a future Slam winner. She continued to show composure well beyond her years to serve out the first set, coming out on top in a 15-shot rally and throwing in an ace to boot; she finished the opening set with 10 winners and just two unforced errors.

There were no signs of the youngster tensing up, either, but rather it was seasoned campaigner Williams – making her 22nd, and potentially last, Wimbledon appearance – who looked rattled, double faulting twice to gift Gauff a break at the start of the second set. This time nerves did show, with Venus breaking back, but Gauff was undeterred and broke Venus’ serve for the third time in the match after a string of brilliant rallies. Gauff, who goes by the nickname ‘Coco’, was close to tears after winning
Now the difficult part came as she looked to serve out the match for the biggest win of her fledgling career and she was made to work for it; three deuces, a saved break point and then, finally, victory as No.1 Court rose to their feet to salute a player that will be around for a very long time. Gauff’s win marked a day of upsets at the All England Club, with Venus’ exit coming after World No.2 Naomi Osaka was stunned on Centre Court, while 10th seed Aryna Sabalenka also suffered defeat on the opening day.
